Editorial standards

A definition should keep the context that gives it meaning.

This page describes the publishing method for the guide. It does not claim authority over TIAA records, plan documents or professional interpretations.

Public sources first

Precise statements about TIAA terminology are checked against TIAA’s public materials where available. A public account FAQ can support a narrow statement about the kinds of record details it discusses. A plan-specific page supports a statement about that identified plan, not every product carrying the same provider name.

Sources can change. A review date records an editorial check, not a guarantee that every linked page remains unchanged or that a visitor’s private record is described by the public material.

Keep scope attached to the statement

When a source describes a particular program or product, the guide identifies that context. It avoids turning an example into a universal rule. If a claim cannot be confirmed at the necessary level of detail, the text uses a question for the official source instead of inventing an answer.

Explain without reproducing account workflows

The guide summarizes concepts in its own words. It does not reproduce official forms, provide account-access prompts or turn a provider’s account instructions into a service offered by this publisher. Source links are provided for attribution and context.

Fictional means structurally invented

Example cards use labels such as Primary A and Contract Label B. They contain no real people, percentages or identifiers. They illustrate relationships between words rather than a recommended arrangement.

Corrections need public context

A helpful correction identifies the page, term and a public URL. It does not require a statement, screenshot, legal document or private account link. Use Editorial Contact for a general content question or a source correction.

Editorial correspondence is not a route to customer support or individual advice. No review of a message establishes that a designation has been prepared, accepted or verified.
