Home / Questions to Verify With an Official Source
Question responsibility map

Match the question to the source that can address it.

A clear question identifies what needs confirmation. It does not ask this educational publisher to inspect or resolve a personal designation.

Record and source

TIAA official source

Ask which official record describes the relevant designation, what its stated coverage includes and whether separate contract labels need clarification. The publisher cannot view or verify that record.

Plan context

Plan administrator

Ask which plan materials apply and where a plan-specific explanation should be confirmed. Do not assume that a general glossary replaces those materials.

Legal interpretation

Attorney

Questions about trust or estate wording, legal documents or the meaning of a legal requirement need an appropriate legal professional. The desk does not interpret them.

Individual tax context

Tax professional

An individual tax consequence cannot be inferred from a category label. A tax professional can identify the information needed for an individual analysis.

Neutral questions to take to the appropriate source

  • Does this designation cover all relevant accounts, or only identified accounts?
  • Are any contracts listed separately?
  • Is a contingent level recorded in the applicable official source?
  • Do additional plan rules need confirmation?
  • Which official record controls the question being discussed?

These prompts do not require an account number or a beneficiary name to appear on this website. When contacting an official source independently, use that source’s own secure process for any information it legitimately needs.

Describe the uncertainty before the conclusion

“I need to understand the scope of the record” is a different statement from “the record is wrong.” Likewise, a missing label on a summary is not proof that the underlying designation is missing. A useful question leaves room for the source to explain the context.

The same approach applies when a plan document and a public education page use different language. Ask which audience and record each describes. Avoid choosing one as controlling based only on its layout, date or position in a search result.

Where an editorial question belongs

Use Editorial Contact for a definition that is unclear on this site or a public source link that needs correction. The publisher cannot access records, act as customer support or provide individual professional advice.

A useful editorial note names the page or term and, if available, a public source URL. Do not include beneficiary names, account or contract numbers, private percentages, forms, screenshots or statements.
